You hit your first forehand with the 2024 HEAD Extreme and something felt off. Not bad, exactly. The ball went where you aimed. Spin came easily. But the connection between stringbed and hand felt like a conference call with a one-second delay — every message arrived slightly late, slightly muffled.

That dullness was the 2024's defining trait. The 2026 version, with Hy-Bor material layered into the upper hoop, claims to fix it. But here's what the marketing won't tell you: Hy-Bor doesn't make the Extreme stiffer or more powerful. It makes the upper hoop more readable. Let me explain what that means for your game.

The myth you've heard

Hy-Bor is boron fibre, a material borrowed from aerospace and Formula 1. The implication, if you read the press copy, is that boron makes the frame stronger, stiffer, and therefore more explosive. A faster, harder-hitting Extreme. The 2024 player who wanted more punch will hear "boron" and think "finally."

That reading is understandable and wrong.

What actually changed

I tested four versions of the 2026 Extreme over two weeks — the MP (300g, 100 sq in), the Pro (315g, 100 sq in), the MPL (280g, 100 sq in), and the MP XL (300g, 100 sq in, extended ½ inch). All four share the same core construction: Graphene 360+ in the throat and lower hoop, with Hy-Bor strips laid into the upper hoop at 10 and 2 o'clock.

The key detail: Hy-Bor is not everywhere. It's a targeted reinforcement of the part of the frame that bends most during a spin shot — the upper third. On the 2024 model, that area felt dead. HEAD's engineers had dampened vibration so aggressively that you lost the sensation of the ball sliding across the strings. You got spin, but you couldn't feel how much.

The 2026 brings that sliding sensation back. On kick serves and heavy topspin forehands, the upper hoop now feeds a clear signal: the ball is here, it's brushing across this many strings, and it's leaving at this angle. You don't have to guess. The racquet tells you.

What Hy-Bor does not do

It does not make the frame stiffer. RA flex ratings across the 2026 lineup are nearly identical to 2024 — the MP sits around 66-67, the Pro slightly lower. If you found the 2024 comfortable, the 2026 will feel familiar.

It does not add raw power. The MP XL, at 27.5 inches, produces more racquet-head speed and thus more pace, but that's the extended length doing its job, not the boron. The standard-length MP generates roughly the same ball speed as the 2024 version.

It does not make the racquet louder or more metallic. Some boron-fibre frames from other brands have a pingy, high-pitched response. The Extreme 2026 remains muted — just less separated from your hand. The dead zone at the top of the stringbed is gone. What replaces it is a clean, medium-deep thud, not a crack.

The model that surprised me

I went into testing expecting to prefer the Pro, the heavier platform that experienced players usually gravitate toward. What I kept picking up was the MP XL.

The extra half-inch gives you more leverage on the upper hoop, which means you feel the Hy-Bor reinforcement more distinctly. On a one-handed backhand, where contact often drifts high and toward the tip, the MP XL makes the difference between a ball that floats and a ball that clears the net with shape. You can aim smaller targets high across the net because the frame tells you exactly where the contact point was.

The MP XL is also strung slightly looser from the factory (48-50 lbs versus 50-52 for the MP), which helps the upper hoop pocket the ball on spin shots. If you demo one, pay attention to the first kick serve you hit. The ball should feel like it climbs the stringbed before launching. If it doesn't, the tension is too high.

Who should switch from the 2024

You, if the 2024 felt disconnected. The 2026 gives back the upper-hoop feel without becoming harsh. It's the same frame with a clearer voice.

You, if you hit a one-handed backhand. The Hy-Bor reinforcement is most noticeable on contact points above the centre of the stringbed, which is exactly where the one-hander lives.

Not you, if you wanted more power from the same swing. Look at the MP XL for the extra length, or consider a different frame entirely if you need more free pace.

Not you, if you liked the 2024 exactly as it was. Nothing here will change your mind.

The honest takeaway

The 2024 Extreme wasn't a bad racquet. It was a good racquet that felt incomplete — you could produce spin, but you couldn't read it. The 2026 solves that one problem and leaves everything else alone.

The myth was that Hy-Bor makes the Extreme stiffer and more powerful. The truth: Hy-Bor makes the Extreme tellable. You can feel where the ball leaves the stringbed. For the player who couldn't trust the 2024, that's the only upgrade that matters.
