Electronic Music Production and the Myth of Sacred Reverb

A producer opens a folder of field recordings and finds one labelled mbira: twenty-odd hand-forged metal keys, a gourd, a room with people breathing in it. Within a minute the sample is sitting in a hall reverb with a four-second tail, low-passed somewhere around 3 kHz, drifting in over a sub. It sounds enormous. It sounds, everyone in the room agrees, sacred.
That gesture is the most repeated piece of advice in cinematic electronic music production: if you want a sound to feel holy, put it in a big space. Long tail, generous pre-delay, roll off the top, let it bloom. The advice works often enough that it has hardened into a reflex. As a theory of how sacred sound actually behaves, though, it is about half right — and the failing half is the half that matters when you are sampling from traditions that built their sound to do something other than impress.
Where the advice is right
Reverb is a distance cue. The ear reads the gap between a direct sound and its first reflections — the initial time delay gap, the thing your pre-delay knob is really setting — as room size, and reads the decay time as how much stone is out there. Stretch both and the listener is placed inside something bigger than a body. That is not a trick; it is how enclosure has always felt.
And there are African sacred sounds that genuinely live in stone. In the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, in the Ethiopian highlands, the Orthodox Tewahedo liturgy is sung in chambers carved down into volcanic rock — surfaces that return a long, dense decay. The chant tradition, credited by the church to the sixth-century deacon Yared, is paced for that decay: the kebero drum's strokes and the shake of the tsenatsil, a metal sistrum, arrive with room to ring out. Put that music in a dry booth and you have removed an instrument. Here the reflex is correct, because the reverb is not an effect. It is the building.
Where it breaks down: the buzz
Now go south, to the Shona of Zimbabwe and the mbira dzavadzimu, the instrument whose name marks it as belonging to the ancestors. The keys are plucked with the thumbs and a forefinger, and the instrument is usually seated inside a deze, a large gourd resonator hung with shells or bottle caps — machachara. Add hosho, gourd rattles loaded with seeds, and the result is not a clean tone at all. It is a dense, hissing, broadband haze sitting on top of every note.
That haze is deliberate, and it is not decoration. Across a wide band of the continent, instrument makers add noise on purpose: Mande balafon gourds are pierced and covered with a thin membrane — traditionally spider egg-sac silk, now often cigarette paper — so each note comes with a rasp; the kora often carries a nyenyemo, a perforated metal plate strung with rings that jangles as the strings are plucked. Where a European luthier spent four hundred years subtracting noise, these traditions spent as long tuning it.
And this is precisely what the big-hall move destroys. Buzz lives in fast, quiet, high-frequency transient detail. A long tail smears it into wash, a low-pass filter deletes it, and the distance cue tells the listener the sound is far away — the opposite of what a buzzing instrument is doing, which is asserting that it is here, in the room, at close range, physically vibrating. You can reverb an mbira into something majestic. You cannot reverb it into something present. Those are different feelings, and the tradition chose the second one.
Where it breaks down: the drum is talking
The second failure is blunter. Some of these drums are speaking, and reverb makes them illegible.
Yoruba, spoken across southwestern Nigeria and into Benin, is a tone language: the same syllable at a high, mid, or low pitch is a different word. The dùndún, an hourglass drum held under the arm with tension cords running its length, is squeezed to bend the pitch of each stroke, and a skilled player uses that to reproduce the tone contours of actual speech — praise phrases, names, proverbs, commentary on whoever just walked in. Versions of what a given phrase means differ by lineage and by town, and drummers will tell you so.
A phrase like that moves at roughly the speed of talking. Hang three seconds of decay on it and syllable four is ringing through syllable seven; the pitch contour, which is the message, becomes a smear. What you get back is atmosphere, purchased by deleting language. Producers do this constantly without knowing it, because in a sample library the file is named African percussion loop and nothing tells you the drum was in the middle of a sentence.
Does reverb make music sound sacred?
No. It makes music sound distant and enclosed, and one common experience of the sacred — the cathedral kind, the awe of a space larger than you — happens to be built from exactly those cues. That is why the trick works when it works. But plenty of ceremonial sound is engineered for the reverse: closeness, buzz, repetition, and interlocking parts you are meant to be standing inside rather than gazing at. Reverb cannot deliver that, and applied heavily it actively cancels it.

The honest version of the rule
The rule worth carrying into electronic music production is not make it sacred with reverb. It is closer to this: reverb encodes distance and enclosure, so use it when the sound you are working with was made to travel through a large enclosed space — and reach for something else when it wasn't.
Which turns the decision into a question about the source rather than the plugin. Was this sound built to fill stone, to cut across an open compound, or to sit two feet from the ear of the person it is addressing? If it was built for proximity, the tools that serve it are the ones that preserve transients and high-frequency noise, not the ones that bury them. Short early reflections instead of tails. Room tone kept, not replaced.
The part nobody has settled
Here is where honesty requires stopping short. It is often claimed that repetitive drumming induces altered states by driving brain rhythms — the auditory-driving hypothesis, popularised from experiments in the 1960s. Gilbert Rouget's Music and Trance took that apart in 1980, showing that trance appears in traditions with no drumming and fails to appear in traditions with plenty, and arguing that what music does is culturally learned, not neurologically forced. Later entrainment research has kept the question alive rather than closed it.
The buzz sits in the same unsettled territory. Mbira players, as Paul Berliner recorded in The Soul of Mbira, describe the buzzing as what carries the music where it needs to go. Psychoacoustics can measure that added noise raises perceived loudness, masking, and something listeners report as liveness — but it has no settled account of why deliberate noise-loading reads to the body as presence, or whether that response is universal or learned.
So the question a producer is actually facing is one the science hasn't answered: when a buzzing note feels close and a reverberant one feels holy, is that the ear reporting physics, or is it a listener repeating what a culture taught them to hear?
